Creating an SDS (Simple Method)

The "simple method" is the quickest way to create a new SDS in your system. Use this method to create an SDS when you have little information about the new SDS and/or little time to create it.

When creating an SDS in this way, you can define all of the following data for it, but note that only the first two items are required:

Common Name (required): The most common name of the corresponding product.

Manufacturer (required): The company who manufactures this product. Enter the company name manually or select one from the manufacturer index.

Revision Date: The date when this revision of the SDS was completed/published.

Corporate Internal ID: An ID number/code by which this SDS is identified at the Corporate level.

Site Internal ID: An ID number/code by which this SDS is identified at your local site.

Language: The language in which the SDS content is written.

SDS Format: The format in which the SDS content is organized.

SDS File: A text or image file representing the SDS content. If this is a .txt file, you can set it as the primary text file: the text file appearing in full on the SDS's Home page.

Temporary SDS Status: If appropriate, set the new SDS as a temporary placeholder while the permanent SDS is still in process.

Note: If you are creating an SDS with properties similar to an existing SDS in your system, this may not be the most efficient way to create the new SDS. It may be quicker to clone the existing SDS and alter its copy as necessary; see Cloning an SDS for details.

To create an SDS (simple method):

Starting at the SDS Search Center page (How do I get there?), do the following:

1.      Click the New SDS link on the right side of the page. A set of fields will appear.

2.      Enter the new SDS’s Common Name.

3.      Enter the new SDS’s Manufacturer. (To choose one from the manufacturer names already recorded in your system, click the “” button.)

4.      Enter the new SDS’s Revision Date.

5.      Enter the new SDS’s Corporate/Site Internal IDs.

6.      Choose the new SDS’s Language.

7.      Choose the new SDS’s SDS Format.

8.      To upload a text or image file representing the new SDS, enter the path to that file in the SDS File field. (To browse your local network for the desired file path, click the Browse… button.)

9.      To create this SDS as temporary, check the Create as a temporary SDS checkbox.

10.  If you entered an SDS File path to a file of the .TXT format, you may designate this file as the SDS’s primary text file (i.e., the text file that will appear in full on the SDS’s Home page) by checking the Upload SDS file as Primary Text File checkbox.

11.  Click the Save button to create the new SDS. If you chose to create the SDS as temporary in step 9, a pop-up message will tell you the new SDS’s temporary SDS number and what to do with this number.
