Chemical Synonyms

Note: This feature requires the Chemical Inventory module licensed at your site.

A chemical may be known by multiple names. For example, sulfuric acid is also known by the following names: oil of vitriol, battery acid, and dihydrogen sulfate.

Any chemical's additional names can be added to the chemical as synonyms. After a synonym is added, it has the following effects:

It is displayed on the chemical's Home page.

It functions just like another chemical name, enabling you to find and open a chemical using a variety of names. When you enter a chemical's synonym in the Chemical Name field for a search (see Chemical Search Center), that chemical appears in the search results.

Any CAS/Chemical threshold list item matching the new synonym may apply its thresholds to the chemical's activities and quantities in your inventory. (See Chemical Inventory Limits for details.)

When a Corporate user adds a synonym to a chemical, the synonym functions at all sites where the Chemical Inventory module is licensed. When a local site user adds a synonym to a chemical, the synonym functions at that site only.

While chemical synonyms are displayed on the chemical's Home page, you can also use the procedure below to view them on a dedicated display, where they can also be edited.

To view a chemical's synonyms:

Starting at the Chemical Home page (How do I get there?), do the following:

        Under Additional Details, click Synonyms.

The Synonyms page opens, showing the chemical's current synonyms. Synonyms shown in blue were added by a Corporate user, and function at all sites. If you are a local site user, synonyms shown in black were added at your site and function at your site only.
