Installing/Configuring the DSM Application

Note: This feature requires both of the following modules licensed at your site:

        Chemical Inventory

        HandHeld Inventory

A DSM (Data Station Manager) is any workstation serving as a docking station for handheld bar-code scanner devices. To be able to communicate data between these devices and Comply Plus, each of these workstations must have the Sphera Data Station Manager application installed.

Before you install and configure this application on a workstation using the procedure below, ensure the following actions are already performed:

The workstation is defined in Comply Plus as a DSM (see Managing DSMs).

Each handheld device to be docked at this workstation is defined in Comply Plus (see Managing HandHeld Devices) and:

        Assigned to this DSM (see Editing a DSM);

Assigned to an initial inventory location (Editing a HandHeld Device).

The Palm OS HotSync software is installed on this workstation (for details, see the documentation included with the device).

To install and configure the Data Station Manager application:

Note: Before you begin this procedure:

Ensure the conditions listed above are met.

Close all applications other than your browser.

Starting at the Application Administration page (How do I get there?), do the following:

1.      In the menu on the left, do either of the following:

Under INVENTORY > HandHeld Inventory Manager, click Download DSM.

Under OTHER, click IHS Fonts and Utilities. In the list of downloadable files, click Data Station Manager (DSM).

2.      When prompted, click Run.

The DSM Setup tool opens.

3.      Read the introductory text and click Next.

4.      In the displayed list, select the directory on this workstation where the Palm OS HotSync software is installed. (If it does not appear in the list, click Browse to browse the workstation’s directories. When you find it, select it and click OK.) Then click Next.

5.      The folder shown near the bottom of the display is where the Data Station Manager application will be installed. (To install the application in a different folder, click Browse, find the desired destination folder, select it, and click OK.) When the desired folder is shown, click Next.

6.      Enter the name of the Program Manager group where the Data Station Manager icons will be added. Then click Next.

7.      If you are unsure of any installation settings entered so far, click Back to go back and modify any of your entries. Otherwise, click Next.

The Data Station Manager application is installed to the folder specified at step 5. This may take a few minutes.

8.      Do one of the following, depending on the state of the check box that enables you to run the Data Station Manager immediately:

Check box can be selected: Select the check box. Then click Finish to exit the installation tool and open the Data Station Manager.

Check box is disabled: Click Finish to exit the installation tool. Restart the workstation, then open the Data Station Manager.

When you open the Data Station Manager for the first time, a message indicates some configuration is needed.

9.      Click the OK button below the message.

Fields for configuring the DSM application are displayed.

10.  In the Base URL of CPW Server field, enter the base URL of your Comply Plus server.

11.  In the Root path to HandHeld device Synchronization Directories field, Comply Plus automatically identifies the directory where handheld devices will upload their information during inventory. Change this directory only when directed to do so by Customer Care.

12.  In the Automatic Data Polling Interval field, enter the default number of minutes you want to pass between the intervals when the Data Station Manager automatically gathers uploaded handheld device data.

13.  Fill in your Comply Plus login information: your Site Name, User Name, and Password. Re-enter your password in the Confirm Password field.

14.  If Sphera hosts your Comply Plus system, enter your Sphera-supplied Customer ID in the HOSTCUST (Dolphin Supplied) field. (If you are unsure whether your system is hosted by Sphera, consult Customer Care.)

15.  Click OK.

The application shows a list of the DSMs defined in Comply Plus (see Managing DSMs).

16.  Select the DSM representing this workstation and click OK.

17.  Close the Data Station Manager application. This ensures the application does not attempt to poll any handheld device while the Lot Assistant tool is being installed to the device.

18.  From the folder where the Data Station Manager was installed, open Lot Assistant Install.

The Lot Assistant installer opens.

19.  In the Lot Assistant installer, select the handheld device you want to configure for use with this workstation. (The display varies depending on your specific software. For example, you might see a User menu, in which you would select the desired device’s name/user ID.)

20.  Confirm the installation of the Lot Assistant (by clicking the Done button, for example; again, this varies depending on your specific software).

21.  Perform a HotSync operation with the handheld device.

The Lot Assistant is installed to the device. During the installation, you might be asked to confirm your selection of the device name/user ID.

22.  Locate and run the Lot Assistant on the device by selecting the Lot Assist icon on its display.

The Lot Assistant is initialized on the device.

23.  Perform another HotSync operation with the device to transmit the assigned location (defined earlier while editing the device in Comply Plus) to the device. To verify the location is successfully assigned, return to the Lot Assistant and note the location name in the upper left of the device’s display.

24.  If multiple devices are to be managed by this DSM, repeat steps 18-23 for each additional device.

This workstation and its handheld device(s) are now configured to take inventory. For details, see Taking HandHeld Inventory.
